Sonic Generations is a platform video game released by SEGA in 2011. Platform video games focus on jumping action, where the player must clear obstacles such as barriers, traps, and pits by jumping over them in order to reach the goal. Sonic Generations feature its titular character, Sonic the Hedgehog, in his adventures to stop the evil plans of the games main antagonist, Dr. Eggman. Sonic is an anthropomorphic hedgehog that possesses the ability to run in supersonic speeds. Sonic can fight his enemies by curling into a ball and tackling them. Sonic Generations feature also features characters from both classic and modern Sonic the Hedgehog games. Sonic Generations is the first game in the franchise that used a Stereoscopic 3D display. Stereoscopic 3D provides more visual depth in the game environment.

Sonic Generations features nine stages and seven level bosses taken from previous Sonic the Hedgehog games. The game retains its basic moves like spin attack and spin dash used to attack enemies. Added game moves include Homing Attacks which allows the player to hit an enemy by a target-seeking mid-air spin attack, Combo Moves which is used to fill up the boost gauge, Drifts which allow the player manage tight turns, as well as Stomp and Light Speed Dash attacks. Sonic Generations also include the Sonic Boost, a special move that allows Sonic to dash with greater speed. This move can be executed once the player fills up the Boost Gauge. Sonic Generations also features the collectible red and gold rings, which represent Sonic’s health in a level. Players lose these rings if they get hit by an enemy.

In Sonic Generations, players are scored based on how quickly they clear a level. Best scores are displayed in the game statistics section. Other game modes feature different scoring methods.
