Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword is the second expansion pack of the Civilization IV game. It is developed by Firaxis Games and published by Take Two Interactive. The game was officially released on July 23, 2007 in North America. In this turn-based strategy game, the player’s goal is to build to an empire using the given initial resources and strive hard to make that empire prosper. This expansion pack added focuses on providing new content to the in-game eras after the gunpowder invention.

One of the major changes in this game is the addition of a new gameplay called Corporations. This feature enables players to build corporations and expand them throughout the world. Corporations will only become available as soon as the Corporation technology is discovered. This feature also offers benefits to players in return for resources. In this expansion pack, espionage becomes available earlier in the game providing players new methods to spy on their opponents and protect the empire’s secrets. The game also added new random events including pleas for help, demands from citizens and natural disasters. If the player overcomes these random events, it can help the empire prosper faster. Beyond the Sword also features Advanced Starts, which are pre-game setup phases. This feature lets players buy components for developed nations. However, if the player use this feature, declaring war is not possible for the game’s first 10 turns.
