Serious Sam is a first-person shooter video game released in 2001. It is the first instalment in the Serious Sam series in which the player takes the role of Sam “Serious” Stone. The storyline follows the journey of Sam as he fights the forces of Mental, an alien overlord who wants to destroy the human kind. The story comes in two episodes – Serious Sam: The First Encounter and Serious Sam: The Second Encounter. A fan-made third episode is also available called Dark Island.
Players can play the game in either single-player or multiplayer mode. The multiplayer mode involves a cooperative gameplay via the Internet using a split-screen mode. The single-player mode follows a story-based gameplay. The gameplay follows the general flow and structure of a first-person shooter game wherein enemies are frequently spawning and attacking the player in large waves. The player must defend himself by dodging his projectiles. Instead of taking cover, the player is capable of charging through jumping and strafing. Unlike most FPS games, Serious Sam’s armor and health cannot be regenerated. The player can regain armor and health by picking up armor and health packs scattered throughout the game. Sam is capable of carrying unlimited number of ammunition and guns.
