King's Bounty

New World Computing (Proprietary)

King's Bounty is a turn-based role-playing game developed by New World Computing and designed primarily by Jon Van Caneghem, released on 1990. The game follows the adventures of King Maximus’ hero, in his quest to retrieve the Scepter of Order from the enemy Arech Dragonbreath and his forces of chaos. This game features four hero classes—Knight, Paladin, Barbarian, and Sorceress. The player takes on the role of the hero leading his army across four continents. This game features 25 map pieces which reveals the location of the Scepter. However, the player need not acquire all map pieces to find the scepter.

King's Bounty features 17 villains that the protagonist has to battle with. With each defeat, the player acquires a new puzzle piece. The player also acquires treasures or bonuses from treasure chests scattered across the game world. Bonuses may include extra health or magical strength. There are eight kinds of artifacts that, when acquired, gives the player some unique power, as well as another map piece. All the artifacts, treasures, and villains are randomly scattered each time the game is played. Even the location of the Scepter of Order is randomized each time. This makes the game re-playable even after the protagonist has already finished it. The Heroes of Might and Magic game series was loosely-based on this game.
