AbiWord is an open source word processor released in 1998. The program consists of basic word-processing features like character formatting, lists, and indentations. It also features some advanced tools, such as spell checker, grammar checker, templates, footnotes, and multiple views. The program’s interface is simple and intuitive. It resembles the interface of Microsoft Word before the 2007 edition. It supports all standard word documents, such as Microsoft Word, RTF, HTML, OpenOffice.org, and more.

AbiWord supports plug-ins. Several plug-ins can be added in order add functionality to the application. Some of the plug-ins are web URL based dictionary, Wikipedia, text-to-speech, and an English language thesaurus. One of the main features of AbiWord is online collaboration. The program has a plug-in that allows several users to work on a single document via AbiCollab.net. The websites service synchronizes all the changes made to the document and users can collaborate in real-time. The software also supports several languages and the text can be viewed from right to left, left to right, or in mixed mode.

AbiWord is a multi-platform word processor and is compatible with Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, Solaris, and QNX. The program was supposed to a component included in AbiSuite, but it was changed to open source.
