Battle for Wesnoth

David White (Open Source)

Battle for Wesnoth, or simply Wesnoth, is an open source, turn-based, strategy video game developed and published by Battle for Wesnoth Development Team. The game was first released on October 2, 2005. In this game, the player’s goal is to establish a strong army by conquering villages while defeating enemies to gain experience points. The game is set in a fictional world occupied by the Tolkienesque races (i.e. trolls, humans, dwarves, orcs, and elves) and races specific to Wesnote like the Drakes. These races are also the available factions in the game.

Wesnoth’s gameplay is a turn-based game where the playing field is on a hex map. The game’s strategy battle aspect involves fighting at a favorable time of the day and favorable terrain. Other strategy elements include positioning units to prevent enemy movement and detaining villages who produce gold. The game can be played in either a single player or multiplayer mode. The game is composed of 16 campaigns with varying levels of difficulty. User-made campaigns are also available for download. Some of the available campaigns include the Heir to the Throne, Northern Rebirth, Descent into Darkness, and others. The game also features multiplayer modes that can be played against or with other players (AI or human). Multiplayer modes have both cooperative and competitive games. Modifications are available in the game. The game offers add-ons, a map editor, and WML-based campaigns.
