Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome is a real-time strategy game developed by Microsoft as an expansion to its Age of Empires game franchise. It is a history-based game focusing on the rise to power of the Roman Empire. Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome features four playable civilizations—Carthaginians, Macedonians, Palmyrans, and Romans. Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome was released on October 1998. It also features single player and multiplayer game modes.

In Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome, players are able to manage the conquests of four civilizations from Rome, Carthage, Palmyra, and Macedonia. New battle units are added including the Fire Galley, Scythe Chariot, Camel Rider, Armored Elephant, and Slinger. This expansion also features new Roman buildings including the Roman Colosseum. Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome also features four unique researchable technologies—Logistics, Medicine, Martyrdom, and Tower Shield. Medicine increases the healing rate of Priests while Martyrdom allows players to sacrifice a Priest to convert an enemy unit. Logistics allows players to create additional units at half the population count. The current population limitation is at 50. Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome also features a multiplayer mode over a LAN or modem connection. It allows up to 8 players playing simultaneously. Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome features a Genie game engine.
