Macromedia Shockwave Flash is a web browser plug-in developed by Macromedia, first released in 1995 and the latest release being October 2012 by Adobe Systems which acquired Macromedia in 2005. Macromedia Shockwave Flash is a multimedia platform used as a plug-in for web Windows and Mac OS browsers. This plug-in is used for interactive web pages and those with animations. Macromedia Shockwave Flash also provides support to Adobe Director applications to be made available and viewable online.  

Macromedia Shockwave Flash is largely used for viewing shockwave movies and animations to be shown online. Shockwave movies are most often created using the Adobe Director environment versus Flash as the former affords more features and tools for creating. Macromedia Shockwave Flash also features hardware-accelerated 3D. This plug-in also supports several network protocols, one of which is the Internet Relay Chat.

Macromedia Shockwave Flash may be primarily used for online movies and animations, however, actual use may be found in game creation and development. Online applications with high graphical environment requirements also employ Macromedia Shockwave Flash. The plug-in may also be found on online learning environments to provide a more interactive application. Macromedia Shockwave Flash can also simulate real world physics in online learning environments. It can also be used for graphing, calculating, and charting applications.
