StuffIt Application

Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Proprietary)

StuffIt Program is an aggregate of PC software utilities used in archiving and compressing of files and documents with safe encryption as well as in expanding various file archive formats including: ZIP, ZIPX, 7ZX, RAR, and TAR. It is available for both Macintosh and Microsoft platforms while its older versions were made for Linux and Sun Solaris. StuffIt Program primarily uses a proprietary compression format in all its output processes that is also termed as "StuffIt."

The StuffIt Program comes with a neat and expander-type interface, where archives and files can be moved or transferred using drag-and-drop command or other menu controls. Its unpacking mechanism is easily done through single-clicking of archive files. For a more secure encryption and to provide password protection to each ZIP files, the program, by default, suggests that users assign a passcode for every file. Its compression system runs on standard JPEG mechanics that allow larger files to be compressed by 25% of their original size, without any alteration or loss of image quality. Moreover, this enables rebuilding of compressed files to their original format efficiently. Its JPEG standard mechanics implement the arithmetic coding option so that the original image and build of an archived file is fully restored.
