MAFIA: The City of Lost Heaven is a third-person shooter video game that was first released in 2002. The game takes place in the 1930s in the fictional city of Lost Heaven. Players assume the role of a taxi driver, Tommy Angelo, who becomes involved in illegal operations as the driver for a crime family. Players mainly drive in the game to visit different locations and complete missions. However, there are also instances where the character travels by foot.

There are more than 50 cars to be driven in the game. Plus, there are additional 19 cars to be unlocked at the end of the main game mode. While cruising down the streets, players may be caught by policemen for some offences including speeding, and beating a red traffic light. In addition, players can be fined for major offenses, too. Some of these are display of weapon and physical injury. MAFIA has a Free Ride game mode wherein players are free to ride around the city and earn money. Money can be used to purchase weaponry and health, too. Money can be earned by performing simple tasks like driving above the speed limit, killing an enemy, and getting rid of vehicles.
