Nero Burning Rom is an application used for writing data like photos, music, videos, applications, and other types of files into a disc. It was initially released in 1997. It allows users to fully customize the burning process through the options and settings available. Nero supports the creation of various file systems and allows the creation of discs in different formats, such as ISO and UDF data discs, disk image files, audio CDs, DVD video discs, Blu-Ray discs, bootable discs, SecurDiscs, and AVCHD video discs.

Nero also reads audio CDs and allows the saving of audio files and available information on a hard drive. It can also convert the contents into other audio file formats. Apart from that, Nero Burning Rom can also erase data from rewriteable discs or CD-RW. Nero lets users customize the physical discs by printing labels and graphics on discs using the LabelFlash and make use of the LightScribe technology. The Nero application contains a multimedia player and image viewer that helps in assisting the disc productions process. Nero also allows connection to Gracenote - an online music database containing information about audio CDs and vinyl records.
