DriveImage XML is a backup utility developed by Runtime Software. It is specifically developed for backing up partitions and logical drives into image file formats. Aside from this, the application can also be used for browsing, viewing, and extracting files. DrivImage XML is available in two editions – Private and Commercial. The Private edition is free but it can only be used at home. The Commercial edition is a shareware and it is intended for organizations/businesses. This edition can be purchased with 5 up to 100 user licenses.

The program’s image creation process makes use of Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow Services). This enables users to create “hot images” even if the drive is being used. All the created image files are saved in XML format, which enables users to process files using third-party utilities. The program also offers fast processing with its two levels of compression methods. The program also has a restore function, which can be used for restoring image files to any drive. It has a drive restore wizard, which guides users throughout the restoration process. However, the restore function automatically deletes all files stored in the selected drive. The program also features a copy function, which can be used for copying whole partitions to a blank partition without creating an image file first.
